What's in a Name?

Posted by Bonnie Warner Blackburn on

I searched on the internet recently under poems for children- about being unique, special, embracing their individuality etc... There was heaps of cheesy stuff, but with good intent :) There are of course beautiful books also, with incredible artistry, that teach kids about love, kindness, respect, chasing rainbows and chasing dreams.

There's some debate around the need to toughen kids up more- that there's too many growing up with a sense of entitlement and low work ethic. There's always some truth in most sides. I think it's about balance. But it ALL should begin with a little human knowing they are loved. That they are unique and special. Everything else will flow after- inner resilience, compassion, learning about consequences, disappointments and life's challenges. A child is more than their name, but their name is usually the first thing to represent them, that they identify with- that they carry with them into the big world. It may have significant meaning, it may not- they will make it their own anyway, even if they know 20 other people with the same name.

I've incorporated names into lots of artworks for children, to make it special for them and to help them identify and connect more with the piece.. And I have used names as the 'main event' painted in black ink with customized designs that have been mounted in frames, and painted on to small wooden circles in fun abstract designs. The circles especially are light and easy to hang and make for cute and quirky affordable customized art gifts.
