For the last few months I have taken part in helping Navi Collaborative bring to life a beautiful, original and moving mixed media theatre piece that we performed as part of Auckland Fringe Festival. I got loads of experience taking part in the devising rehearsals, producing marketing material, co-coordinating live music gigs (one facet of the project) and helping design and construct key elements for the stage.
It was a huge few months! Navi is an Auckland based theatre company with a passion for creating, collaborating and telling original, authentic stories.
Whatipu is a wild, rugged, gorgeous windswept west Auckland beach. A key set piece on stage was the Whatipu 'rock' which also served as a screen behind which a main character dwells. We also incorporated puppetry, movement, film and music into the experience, and it really all came together to make something special.
One massive challenge was performing (on)WHATIPU in 2 very different spaces, so we had to improvise and adjust accordingly to create 2 versions of the play that were each unique.
